We're a company of passionate, tech-savvy individuals who have a strong desire to create fantastic tools to make physicians' lives easier. We've spent years working in busy physician practices and have designed our web-based electronic health record (EHR) system from the physician's perspective. Each one of us on the team has spent hours shadowing in a physician practice to understand how the medical record is used throughout the practice and within the exam room. We've developed Elation to be an intuitive, easy to use solution that helps you quickly find, digest and act upon relevant clinical information to care for your patients. (Interested in joining?)

I’ve been involved in physicians’ practices for as long as I can remember. My dad is a physician with his own practice, and at various points in time I’ve served as full-time receptionist, billing staff, and office manager. I’ve also been fortunate enough to interact with healthcare at a policy level. Prior to founding Elation, I was an economics professor at Stanford University, focused on healthcare and game theory, and in addition I spent two years as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Scholar in Health Policy at UC Berkeley and UCSF. I also have a background in computer science.

I helped found Elation because I felt compelled. I see an immense threat to patient care brought on by inadequate IT systems and a vast disconnect between policy-makers and front-line clinicians. Technology has offered dramatic improvements in so many other aspects of life. Why not this critically important one? That’s where Elation fits in, and that’s why I’m here.

Kyna holds a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Math, summa cum laude, and a Masters of Science in Computer Science, both from Harvard University, as well as a PhD in Economics from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. Previously, she was a professor at Stanford University’s Department of Economics.

Growing up watching my father care for patients in his primary care practice, I’ve seen not only the impact healthcare professionals have on the lives of individuals but also the difficulties that healthcare providers must deal with to do the job they love: providing patient care.

I’m convinced that information technology will significantly improve the delivery of healthcare — but only with better IT tools than are generally available now. Prior to Elation, I worked with senior healthcare leaders to help digitize health records within large health systems and with front-line physicians to use those applications at the point of care. Rather than help physicians provide better care, existing implementations too often leave physicians with sub-optimal tools to perform life-changing services. It’s amazing that physicians still need to figure out work-arounds to counter system flaws that could harm patients. Elation was established to change that.

Conan holds a Bachelor of Science with distinction in Microbiology & Immunology with double minors in Management and Economics from McGill University, as well as a Masters of Health Sciences in Health Finance & Management from Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Prior to Elation, I worked in healthcare consulting helping hospitals with revenue recovery. In this experience, I gained an appreciation of the intricacies of a health system’s business office. In my efforts to be closer to the actual delivery of care, I found Elation. Here, I’m excited to work with talented individuals and develop strong relationships with our customers. When I’m not doing that, you can catch me playing or watching basketball and trying the newest restaurants around town.

I am a recovering engineer turned product manager. As a structural engineer, I worked making Bay Area hospitals safe and operational after major earthquakes. At Elation, I make the day-to-day lives of providers better, by not only enabling them to deliver higher quality care, but reducing the time they spend charting. I love product management and all that it entails. Between performing user research, studying user behavior, analyzing business opportunities, and roadmap prioritization, there are always questions that need answers.

Outside of work I am playing soccer, backpacking, watching sports, and hanging with my dog Valentine.

I spent the past 5 years as an independent medical supply and device sales representative, mainly to large healthcare systems, hospitals, and ambulatory surgery centers. While I loved presenting medical technology to solve problems, I came to Elation to be part of a game-changing system that can empower independent physicians to deliver the highest quality of care. I love our focus on independent doctors in private practice. I love to put smiles on their faces as Elation helps them to do more of what they want – patient care – and save time on business operations and compliance tasks.

Outside of work, I am the mother of a teenager, which keeps me pretty busy! I like the great outdoors – beach hikes in Bodega Bay, exploring Point Reyes, and traveling. I also love to read and write.

Healthcare has been a constant part of my life from a young age. Both my parents are physicians and many more relatives work in the industry. After college, I took this family calling into my professional career and joined Stryker Medical. Giving me the opportunity to learn how care is provided in a hospital setting.

Joining Elation has allowed me to combine this passion with my love for business and tech start-ups. It is amazing to work with such highly motivated people every day for a mission-driven company that genuinely cares about putting the physician-patient relationship above all else.  Outside of the office, I enjoy playing basketball, watching the Arizona Wildcats, and exploring San Francisco.

I joined Elation in 2017, drawn by the mission to improve the relationship between patients and providers. Now in my role on the Implementation Team, I’m committed to working with providers looking to focus less on patient records and more on their actual patients. I love the fact that my coworkers are here for the same reason.

Prior to Elation, I worked at FiveStars, a loyalty and marketing software service that helped small business compete with the bigger guys. I’m excited that I get to come to work every day and use the skills I learned there: helping providers leverage technology to make their work more enjoyable and their patients happier.

I joined Elation Health because I believe the physician-patient relationship is at its very essence the core of the healthcare experience. With technology and policy changing so rapidly, I see our industry undergoing a paradigm shift focused towards quality. I’m really excited to help Elation be a key driver in fulfilling its mission, which speaks so directly to me: Make sure patients experience the highest level of care whenever they enter the healthcare system and give physicians the tools they need to ensure this.

Previous to Elation, I’ve spent my entire career in healthcare technology sales and business development working on the clinical side of things at Counsyl (a genetic screening company) and the consumer side of things at PatientPop (a marketing platform for independent practices). Outside of Elation — I’m an avid runner, inexperienced yet enthusiastic brewer, outdoor explorer, and fútbol (soccer) fanatic.

Since early in my software development career, I’ve understood that programming and automation are simply a means to an end. All we can do on a computer can in theory be done manually, but if done so, the costs and loss in efficiency can be a tremendous burden. By contributing to the development of Elation’s platform, I have a real opportunity to enable ways that physicians can give better care to their patients. Elation has been designed from the ground up to improve efficiency for the physicians and their staff.

Prior to Elation, I was involved in implementing new technologies for the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) to facilitate knowledge exchange and dialog between physicians, researchers and panelists. During the same period I also developed software aimed at facilitating internal communication and document-sharing for European medical societies. Most recently, I was an early developer at Busbud where I was challenged to build infrastructure able to handle millions of intercity bus schedules on a daily basis, and create adaptive algorithms to automate validation of data accuracy.

Louis has close to 10 years experience in software development and automation.

I moved to San Francisco from New York City and was eager to immerse myself in a company that was truly trying to change the world. I found that very quickly with Elation. I’ve seen first hand the disconnect that exists when physicians have to give the majority of their effort to their EHR rather than to their patients. That disconnect promotes physician burnout and is an outcome that has no winners. That’s why I get such joy working at Elation. Working as a medical scribe during my undergrad years introduced me to the world of electronic health records. During this introduction, I became aware of how their flaws and inefficiencies regularly frustrated providers, keeping them from focusing on their patients. Since then, I’ve worked with other systems and felt that there was no hope. Each was built with the same fundamental ability to demand a physician’s attention.

Elation is different. It focuses on preserving the relationship between providers and patients. It diverges from other EHRs which are bogged down with unintuitive interfaces, clunky workflows, and customer service that is anything but helpful. I saw these changes and knew it was something I wanted to help build. An opportunity to be part of a radical change to healthcare IT. After 3 decades as an M.D., I’ve found that the medical record is not just a record; it is the most important tool in my armamentarium for diagnosing and treating disease. In a day and age when information technology is revolutionizing our lives for the better, it should revolutionize my medical record.

Legacy EHRs, however, are not built with the clinical encounter in mind and in fact cause physicians to spend significantly more time in caring for the same patient load. I’ve always blamed it on the immaturity of information technology, likening the situation to the 11th century Chinese adventurer who tried to reach the moon by tying himself to a rocket: right idea, immature technology. But then I started using Elation: it is built with the clinical encounter in mind, and is meant to provide me with a greatly improved tool for diagnosing and treating disease.

Dr. Fong graduated from the University of Alberta Medical School, and has practiced as a family physician in Canada, in Illinois and in California. Dr. Fong currently practices in Walnut Creek, California and besides his office practice, also actively attends on his own patients who are admitted to the hospital or to nursing homes.

Five years ago while consulting with the venture capital firm of Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers, I became interested in the EHR as a means to do this. Unfortunately, available EHRs to date are sorely deficient and of little value to the practitioner. I was looking to do better and was fortunate to be introduced to Elation Health, they having accomplished the first quantum shift in EHR design that I have seen. I am pleased to be able to contribute my experience and ideas to this worthy project.

Dr. Nierenberg practiced primary care Internal Medicine in Palo Alto, California for almost thirty years. He was the personal physician to many Silicon Valley executives. A graduate of Harvard Medical School, cum laude, Dr. Nierenberg is currently Clinical Professor of Medicine, Emeritus at Stanford University.
