Part 3: Creating Note 2.0 templates

This article explains how to use the new 2.0 Template builder to create templates that leverage blocks for Note 2.0.

 Table of contents:

Overview

Templates are often created for specific visit types (ex. annual wellness exam) or procedures where documentation can be standardized. Inputting a template reduces typing for the user and encourages them to follow a specific flow for the visit.

Visit Note 2.0 introduces a new template builder that allows you to leverage the new standard and custom block technology/concepts. This new builder is covered in the article below.

Rest assured, legacy visit note templates can also be applied in Note 2.0 through the /template command. If you need to make any edits to your legacy templates, please use the instructions on this help center page and not the workflows listed below.

Workflow instructions

Creating a Note 2.0 template

  1. In the blue navigation bar at the top of your Elation account, click your email address followed by Settings.

  2. In the left-hand navigation menu, click the Templates 2.0 page.

  3. Click the + Create Template button.

  4. A pop-up window will appear with what resembles a blank 2.0 note.

  1. Fill in the mandatory Template name field with a description that will help you search for and identify this template in the future.

  2. Add any of the following types of content to the template:

A. Blocks (both standard and custom)

    • Use the + Add Block button and select from the dropdown menu or press the / key on your keyboard to search for a block through a slash command. The same workflows for adding blocks directly to a draft note apply to the creation of a template. For more details, please refer to this article
    • Within the block, add as much or as little content as you’d like to populate the template. You can type this content directly or copy and paste text from another source.

B. Free-text

    • Outside any of the blocks, you can free-text any content. The same workflows for adding text directly to a draft note apply to the creation of a template. For more details, please refer to this article.

C. Dynamic Macros

    • Use the @ shortcut to insert dynamic fields into any standard block or text field to insert real-time patient data into your visit note.
    • When a template containing a dynamic macro is applied to a visit note, any @ fields will autoamatically be replaced with the corresponding patient data:
      • Clinical Profile (Allergies)
        • Bulleted list of Active Allergies from the patient's clinical profile.
      • Clinical Profile (Medications)
        • Bulleted list of Active Permanent Medications from the patient's clinical profile.
      • Clinical Profile (Problems)
        • Bulleted list of Active Problems from the patient's Clinical Profile Problem List.
      • Patient age
        • Patient's age at the time of visit.
      • Patient DOB
        • Patient's Date of birth.
      • Patient name
        • Patient's Legal first name, Middle name & Legal last name.
⚠️ Dynamic macros cannot be used in custom blocks, Vitals fields, structured PE and ROS fields or anywhere outside of the Note 2.0 draft or template builder.

  1. Click Save & Close to complete.

Below is an example of a care plan template created for hypertension.
